For the Norwalk High School Winter Percussion Ensemble, hard work truly pays off.

Assistant City Clerk Erin Herring said, "You usually see sports teams up here but this time, it's music. These kids work harder than any group of kids I have ever known in my life."

The Winter Percussion Ensemble took second place in the Winter Guard International Competition in Dayton, Ohio on April 12. Mayor Harry Rilling recognized the band's achievement during Tuesday night's Common Council Meeting

"We truly truly appreciate all that you do. I have watched you practice and I know the blood, sweat and tears that you have put into your program. You do us honor and you do us proud," said Mayor Rilling.

"This group of ladies and gentlemen, this is the finest that Norwalk has to offer. I am so so proud of you guys. We never even got that close before. To be the silver medalist and have a national title, you guys should be very very proud because I know that I am and all of us up here are," said Majority Leader Jerry Petrini, an alumni of the Norwalk High School Band.

Members say bringing home the silver medal is something they will never forget.

"It's a lot of fun. I was really nervous at first because I really wanted to medal and I am really glad we did because we worked really hard this year to medal," said sophomore cymbalist Kaitlyn Turlis.

Senior ensemble member Avery Collins said, "I just want them to work as hard as they did this year. This was a really good year for us and as long as we can keep this up, I am sure they are definitely going to get gold as soon as they get back out there."
