Norwalk High School science teacher Larry Anastasia said his students raised $12,000 when "didn't think we would get half of that."

But they did, and then some.  Saturday Norwalk High School teachers and students went under the shaver to raise funds for the St. Baldricks' Foundation.

St. Baldricks' funds childhood cancer research.  That's something the school's student group, Bears Beating Cancer, supports.

"Just about everybody in the club knows somebody impacted by cancer, so it hits home for everybody," said junior Julia Gorman, a "Bears Beating Cancer" member.

A.P. Psychology teacher Martha Morris said it would be "awesome" to contribute to something that could make hospitals like St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital "irrelevant."

"Now that I have grandchildren, I would hate for them to be ill and be battling a disease," said language speech pathologist Virginia Anstead.

"Nobody should have to go through that," Morris added.  "Especially little kids."

Gorman said the widespread show of support brightens her fellows students spirits.

"We're making a difference and being able to donate so much money," she said.

"Once they see their friends do it, they'll want to do it," Anastasia said of the students.  "Hopefully some people have aren't shaving this year will shave next year."

"It's one of the things that makes it great to teach here."
