From the pages of a textbook to the streets of Rome, one Norwalk Public School teacher will be heading to Italy over the summer to experience artistic masterpieces with the help of Fund for Teachers.

"The opportunity of being able to go and explore and see the culture and walking through the streets of Rome and Venice and Florence and being in the shoes of those famous artists and architects will just bring it to another level," said Diana Manousos.

Diana Manousos has been teaching art at Brien McMahon High School for five years. Recently she was given the opportunity to inspire more students and teach AP Art History.

Manousos is one of eight Norwalk Public School teachers to receive a grant from the organization. She will attend Taft Educational Center's AP Art History workshop before heading to Italy in July.

The educators are recipients of grants totaling more than $34,000.  The teachers will embark on summer odysseys spanning North America, South America and Europe.

"AP Art History students will be able to benefit from this All of the art classes I teach - Art 101, drawing, painting - all of those classes will benefit because when you bring history into it, you give students a background," Manousos

This year, 487 teachers representing 318 schools received Fund for Teachers grants. Fund for Teachers is one of the largest funders of teacher learning in the country, investing $24 million in more than 6,500 teachers since 2001.

"I'm so excited. I've never been to Italy before. I am actually half Italian so it will be really great on multiple levels," said Manousos.
