Peace, love, kindness and equality resonated throughout West Rocks Middle School Friday morning as hundreds of students took a look back at history in the auditorium to watch teachers and fellow classmates sing, dance and perform tributes to Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks.

"I want the students to understand their place in the world," said West Rocks Principal Lynne Moore. "to be a helper to be a leader, to have that fire inside of them as Dr. King and Rosa Parks. This is where we teach them do all the good that you can."

"Martin Luther King Day means to me that I can overcome anything, anyone can overcome anything if they just believe it," said one student. "And peace is ours, we should all be treated equally."

"All colors, nations join together," said another student.

West Rocks Martin Luther King Jr. celebration is an annual event principal Lynne More says teaches students to never forget their history.

"It inspires me to be equal and friendly to anyone who comes my way," said one student.

"I think that it means we should be peaceful and we should not fight and we will overcome," said another.

Moore says every year students brings something new and creative into the assembly.

"The girls who did the step and incorporating our motto, be awesome, stop the violence," said Moore. "Every year I really don't know what to expect. I let the students decide what they're going to do."
