"Even if we just get one gun that we know won't get taken in a burglary or won't get misplaced or even God forbid gets mishandled and someone gets hurt, it's worth it," said Norwalk Chief of Police Thomas Kulhawik.

The Norwalk Police Department will host a gun buy back program on Saturday, June 14th at police headquarters.

"We hope to get a number of weapons out of people's homes and off the street. We don't expect that we're going to take the gun out of the hand of a criminal directly, but the hope is that guns that may not be on the road get into the hand of a criminal in a burglary or that might be lost of misplaced by a homeowner, who don't really want the gun anymore,"said Chief Kulhawik.

Collected guns will be inspected before being destroyed by the State.

"If children have grandparents that maybe they don't want the gun anymore or the grandparents have passed or parents have passed. We have people who had been gun owners but now that they have children, they don't want the guns in the house but they also don't want to sell them because they have a reason to say, "I don't want to give these to just anyone." This is an opportunity and they know that the guns are going to be destroyed,"said Chief Kulhawik.

The program will run from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. For more information, call 203-854-3000.

The following will be accepted:

  • Operational Rifles/Shotguns
  • Operational Handguns
  • Operational Assault Weapons
  • Non-Operational Weapons
  • Ammunition
  • Carrying Cases and Holsters
  • BB/Pellet Guns
  • Other dangerous weapons (i.e. Swords, knives etc.)

All firearms MUST BE UNLOADED. Firearms should be transported unloaded in the vehicle's trunk. If not in a vehicle, carry the item unloaded in a box or bag.

Ammunition should be in a container separate from any firearm.

The program is open to all residents, however businesses/dealers do not qualify. Firearms considered to be junk will not be accepted.

Individuals with operational firearms will receive a gift card.
