A taste of the South is celebrating one year in South Norwalk.

"It's the Carolinas, Georgia, a little bit of Tennessee, maybe even a little bit of Alabama in there. It's low country and it's refined," said Greer Fredericks, owner of Mama's Boy Southern Table and Refuge located at 19 North Water Street.

For the past year Mama's Boy Southern Table and Refuge has been the place for low-country cuisine.

"Mama's Boy is named after my son who was about 6 months old when we started the construction on the place. Southern table is to inform people that it's refined, low- country Southern style food and refuge is just that. You seek refuge and this is where the bar is and it's a time out," said Fredericks who was named after a South Carolina brand of peaches.

The restaurant is blending classic southern flavors with a farm to table approach.

"Southerners are known to have their farms and their gardens in their backyards; and it's what's for dinner? Go pick some collard greens or go pick your veggies and let's whip up some dinner tonight," said Fredericks.

Six months after opening, Fredericks' received a call from the Cooking Channel. During their one year anniversary celebration, Mama's Boy will watch their episode of Road Trip with G. Garvin on the Cooking Channel.

"He [host G. Garvin] is a Southerner so it was really special that he paid such good attention to us and really encouraged us and grasped on to what we're doing here," said Fredericks.

Looking back at their first year in business, bringing the South to South Norwalk is something Fredericks' said just made sense.

"South Norwalk has always been really artistic and creative and on the cutting edge a little bit. It is a great concept and I think urban and suburban America loves it," said Fredericks.

Mama's Boy will celebrate their 1 year anniversary Wednesday May 21st starting at 5:30pm.
