Emitt, a 1 1/2 year old mutt, is one of the many dogs rescued from near fatal conditions in Huston, Texas by volunteers at "Shaggy Dog Rescue", and brought up to Dog Gone Smart for training and adoption.
"Some dogs are just turned in by their owners that are moving and just don't want the dog anymore," said Shaggy Dog Rescue volunteer Kurt Jacob.
The canine training and boarding center has been working with Shaggy Dog Rescue for about a year to encourage the adoption process at their facility. So far, five dogs have already found permanent homes through the rescue program. Emitt is just one of many in need of adoption.
"A lot of the dogs out there today that are in need of homes," said Onthank. "Some of them will come with some minor issues so this is the perfect place for our team of trainers to really work on some of these issues that some of these dogs may have to get them more easily adopted."
Each rescue dog is spayed or neutered, fully vetted, groomed, microchipped, and trained at Dog Gone Smart.
"The dog would have been worked with a trainer," said Onthank. "That we have evaluated these dogs before they came here. That these dogs will be good with other dogs and good with other people. Would they be good with small children? That is something we would have to evaluate per dog because not all dogs are good with small children."
