Democrats Take Resident Questions at NEON Town Hall

NEON Hosting Town Hall Wednesday

Mayoral candidates invited to discuss range of topics

Norwalk, CT | Added on July 30, 2013 At 04:01 PM

Norwalk Economic Opportunity Now (NEON) will sponsor a community town hall meeting Wednesday, July 31 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Nathaniel Ely School at 11 Ingalls Ave.

The event, according to a release, is designed to "provide area residents a public forum to learn about what's happening in the community, express their concerns and speak directly with the candidates seeking to lead Norwalk in this November's municipal election."

All candidates seeking to be Norwalk's next mayor have received invitations, NEON said in a statement. Scott Harris, NEON director of communications, said former police chief Harry Rilling and District A councilman Matt Miklave are confirmed to attend.

Mayor Richard Moccia will not attend, Harris said.

"He made it clear to us he prefers not to debate anybody until after the Sept. 10 primary election," he said.

Rilling, Miklave, District D Democratic chairman Vinny Mangiacopra and former Town Clerk Andy Garfunkel are all hoping to win their party's mayoral nomination after the city Democrats could not tab a party nominee July 16.

"Voting season is the time to understand the issues and actions of the candidates -- to make known your pleasure or displeasure with the way things have been handled," said Pat Wilson Pheanious, NEON interim CEO. "Which candidate will make a positive difference in the lives of people? That is the question our parents, workers and community members need to confront."

Wednesday's agenda includes questions regarding the quality of education within Norwalk's public schools; affordable housing; access to health care; reigning in neighborhood crime and violence; police-community relations; and access to local social service programs.

Voter registration will be available on-site, facilitated by the Norwalk chapter of the NAACP.

Light refreshments will be served prior to the event from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
