Superintendent Announcement May Be Delayed

Board chair says new hire will go public July 2 or July 9

Norwalk, CT | Added on June 27, 2013 At 04:54 PM

The Norwalk Board of Education's public announcement of its choice for superintendent could wind up being pushed back another week.

Board Chairman Michael Lyons said in an e-mail Thursday negotiations could delay the board's announcement until July 9.

"Sometimes negotiations like this can take a month, and we're trying to compress them into a week," Lyons said.

Lyons said the candidate has accepted the job and that there had been progress in negotiations over the last week.  But in order to make the announcement on July 2, negotiations have to be finalized with the candidate by Friday.

Due to a 2008 agreement with the Norwalk Federation of Teachers, the Board of Education must give the Federation at least four days notice before publicly hiring a superintendent.  Friday would be the cut-off if the board wants to make the announcement by Tuesday.

"July 2 remains the goal," Lyons said.  "But it could end up being July 9."

Lyons has previously stated his hope that the city's new superintendent would officially take over the role by mid-July.
