The new Music Theatre of Connecticut will open its doors to the public on Saturday.

"We're actually bringing professional theatre back to Norwalk for the first time since the early 1990s," said Kevin Connors, Music Theatre of Connecticut executive artistic director and co-founder.

The theatre, which was located on 246 Post Road East in Westport for 26 years has now officially made its home in Norwalk. It's one of the only three equity theaters left Fairfield County offering professional classes for all ages and award-winning productions with Broadway actors.

"We feel like we're brand new even though we are going into our 28th season," said Connors.

Its new state-of-the art black box theatre is twice as large as its previous setting, offering the audience 63 more seats. Its founders say the more spacious facility will now allow them to control more elements of the production.

"We put in all the windows and the doors and created a 108 seat, very intimate, 3/4 thrust stage," said Jim Schilling, Music Theatre of Connecticut managing director and co-founder.

"There are beautiful public spaces, there's and event and rehearsal room, there are offices, there are two dressing rooms upstairs, a big costume shop, there's a scenic shop just adjacent to the theatre as well," said Connors.

"Here, will actually be able to have on the floor, we can have the layout of the set, and the kids can actually rehearse in the space, they're going to be performing in," said Schilling.

The theatre will celebrate its completion with a free open house event this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Its grand opening gala will take place on Saturday, September 27, with a special performances from Broadway legend Andrea McArdle and the theatre's alumni. The Music Theatre of Connecticut is located on 509 Westport Avenue across from Bed, Bath and Beyond. For more information on classes and events visit www.musictheatreofct.com.
