The City of Norwalk is encouraging residents to make their homes more energy efficient by offering free weatherization services at a local church.
"When working with churches and local community services agenices, the Mayor's office realizes and I realize that there is creation care and there is stewardship from people of all denominations have to take care of their Earth," said Diane Lauricella, a member of the Mayor' Energy and Environment Task Force.
An Intake Office has opened at Community Temple, offering free weatherization services to those who qualify.
Lorenzo Wyatt, Vice President and Owner of Mr. Handyman said, "This is not just a church based initiative. This is about people, families, friends and their friends. Making sure they reduce the amount of energy they consume, reduce the amount of money from their budgets they spend on energy so they can make their lives better."
"It goes beyond energy. It goes to creating jobs for people. It goes to making sure homes are safe. And as ministers, our job is to provide not just the spiritual part, but to make sure we're complete in everything we do as far as outreach to the communities," said Pastor Sonya Merril of Church Without Walls Ministries
The office will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, and Sundays from noon to 5:00 pm.
Customers of Connecticut Light & Power, Yankee Gas, and Connecticut Natural Gas whose combined household earnings are less than 60% of the State median income are eligible for free-of-charge HES-IE services. The HES-IE program also benefits seniors living on Social Security, as well as families who are relying on disability or unemployment insurance.
