According to a press release sent by Senator Bob Duff on December 3, 2013 at 5:07 pm: According to the federal Department of Health and Human Services, all 13 Head Start Classes in Norwalk will open Wednesday, December 4, 2013
Empty chairs and classrooms will be filled this week as Head Start in Norwalk is set to reopen.
Senator Bob Duff said, “We wanted to let parents know, kids know that Head Start in Norwalk will be reopening again on Thursday (December 5, 2013) for sure. We are hopeful for Wednesday. (December 4, 2013)
Reverend Tommie Jackson, Interim CEO/President of NEON said, “We were able to open up a 2 weeks ago the Child School Readiness Program that’s operated through the City of Norwalk and the school system there. We hope that we continue to operate those programs and be able to provide the families the services in this community and give the children the appropriate education at this time in their lives.”
Officials say families will be able to regain a sense of normalcy, lost since October when Head Start closed.
Reverend Jackson said, “CDI has been willing to take on many of the staff people that formally worked for NEON with Head Start which will provide continuity. Children will come back and see familiar faces, familiar classrooms. It lends to less of a disturbance and disruption.
Mayor Harry Rilling said while programs are reopening, there is more work to be done.
“We still have a long way to go. Head Start is one part. The School Readiness is another part. There are so many services that need to be replaced and we have to find the proper way of doing that. There are still a lot of people out there that affected by this whole problem.” Rilling said.
Reverend Jackson said, “There is a great deal of excitement. Jubilation if you will might be a more appropriate word that we are looking forward to ensuring these families get back what they’ve lost since October 24th for the past 7 to 8 weeks, and that this will not happen again. We are working assiduously with CDI and with HHS and we continue to work with the community on this thing.”
