The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk is taking steps to help members of the Jewish community celebrate the Festival of Sukkot by hosting the first public Sukkah tent in Fairfield County.

Sukkot is a seven-day Jewish holiday, also known as the feast of the Booths, where members of the faith rest, and eat together under a temporary dwelling place. On each day members recite a blessing over the lulav branches and etrog, a yellow citrus fruit.

"Sukkot is the festival, which is the festival of joy," said Rabbi Levi Stone. "It's a commandment to be happy on this holiday and one of the ways we celebrate it is coming into the Sukkah and eating and drinking, some people would sleep in the Sukkah."

The 12 by 20 foot Sukkah is located outside the seal exhibit overlooking the riverfront courtyard and open to everyone during aquarium hours from September 19 to the 25th.

"We're trying to make it as comfortable as we can for them," said aquarium pubilist Dave Sigworth. "If a school group wants to come here and do a specific program that is sort of slightly different that what we would offer them in our normal educational offerings we would do that for them so here we have a community of a faith that is very good for us so why not do something to make their visit more enjoyable."

"Here at the Maritime Aquarium I think most of the people will be coming on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday because it is called the weekday of the holiday and we're welcoming everybody from the tri-state area to come and visit us at the maritime Sukkah or as they like to put it the seal-abration on the seals."

The aquarium is also installing a new Kosher vending machine stocked with appropriate snacks. For more information visit http://www.maritimeaquarium.org/
