Saturday was all about the dogs outside SoNo MarketPlace as local residents had the chance to get up close and personal with four furry friends going up for adoption.
"The Pitbull bread is the most populated," said Bully Rescue Inc. President Heidi Lueders. "They are being put down every day in shelters, they're being overbred, so we're here to try to educate the public about how to spay and neuter and care for your animals and hopefully get the numbers down in the shelters."
For the first time SoNo MarketPlace hosted Bully Breed Rescue Inc. for its "Barks & Beer" benefit. Every $5 donation redeemed a ticket for any draft craft beer at the marketplace's new outdoor Farm Terrace Beer Garden.
"There's so many dogs out there, so many animals that are mistreated," said SoNo Market Place Owner Joe Rasso. "There are so many pet shops that are selling dogs and I don't agree. I think you should take a rescue dog."
Bully Breed Rescue Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing bull dog breeds, including American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Bulldogs, and Pit Bull mixes.
The organization, founded six years ago, takes in dogs from kill shelters, owner surrenders and other neglectful situations, and provides medical care, housing, food, training and stability.
"We rescue animals, pit bulls specifically out of neglectful situations, animal shelters, people who cannot keep them any longer and we find them new forever homes," said Lueders.
"There was a pit bull here who had to leave its family, Winston," said Andy Pritchard. "So we were interested in coming down and seeing if maybe we could make a home for Winston."
Members say the organization expects to raise about $500 through donations and merchandise.
"They're very gentle, they're very attached to the children," said Andy Pritchard. "I believe at the turn of the century they were even known as nanny dogs."
